John VanDresser Barnes was born to Bill and Nadine (VanDresser) Barnes, January 28, 1951, in Monett, MO. On Friday, July 9, 2021, he passed into eternal rest. His 70 years of life were colorful and varied, supplying him with endless stories.
After graduating from SMS, he started his career in social work helping troubled youth. John was a lifelong musician, from humble beginnings playing his guitar on his Aunt Maude’s porch in Neodesha, to on-stage performances around the country. Though he’d humbly deny it, everyone around recognized him as one of the best guitar players in the Ozarks. He loved to tinker with his guitars and amps, constantly looking for that perfect sound. His hobbies also included a lifelong love of the outdoors. Swimming, diving, fishing, and hiking came naturally to him.
John had a deep love for animals and collected stray cats like he collected baseball cards and comic books. Cardinals were his favorite; bird and team. He’ll be well-remembered for his enduring sweetness, daunting intelligence, and charming nature by the love of his life, Peggy Russell; his sons, John Barnes, Justin Barnes, Elijah Barnes; his daughter Lindy and her husband Matt Carver; grandchildren, Kadyn Barnes, Cailey Barnes; sister-in-law Penny Russell and her husband Barry Shaw.
In death John was reunited with his loving parents and sister Janet Barnes. He left our world with countless friends and loved ones who will forever treasure the humor, music, encyclopedic knowledge, and love he shared.
Visitation will be at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Greenlawn North Funeral Home. Memorial services will follow the visitation at 2:00 P.M.
