John was a joy to know and have in LIA class at Doling - great rhythm, sparkling eyes, ready smile. Our grandchildren appreciate his tour of the Railroad cars and engine. John's capableness and dedication were an encouragement. His friendship was treasured. Sending his family energy and clarity.

As Chaplain for NARVE Unit 166 and as a friend, I had the privilege to share the love of Jesus Christ with Johnnie on many occasions at our regular meetings. Last September after his becoming ill in one of my e-mails to Johnnie at that time I was able to express the following: "As the "Captain of the Ship" for the Railroad Historical Museum and NARVRE you are greatly missed! Your kindness, work ethic and stature are an inspiration to all". He gratefully acknowledged my note and additional well wishes.
