Joseph Phillip Wright, 76 of Springfield, Missouri, passed from this life on June 28,2024 at Cox South Hospital. Joe had fought a valiant and extended battle with cancer that never dimmed his loving, funny personality.
Joe was born November 18, 1947, to Joseph Riley Wright and Phyllis Ann (Haney) Wright, in Wichita, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson Russell Collier.
Joe never met a stranger and passionately loved his God, family, and friends. He was a man of faith and loved his church. Joe served as a United States Marine for six years. He completed two tours in Vietnam; serving as a radio operator for a field artillery and ground combat unit. He received commendations and many awards including two Presidential Unit awards. Upon returning from service, he began his lengthy career in the telecommunications industry at Southwestern Bell and later at Repcom. During his career he held positions as a lineman, cable splicer, sales, and management.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Kendra, (Todd), son Kevin, (Anna), stepdaughter Lauren, (David) and grandchildren, Audrey, Grant, Arthur, Lillian, Evan and Sarah. Along with, brother, Stephen, nieces Heather and Jillian, and cousin Cathy.
Joe loved life and had many interests. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed many rounds and laughs with friends. A current board member and past President at Twin Oaks Country Club. A faithful member of Campbell United Methodist Church where he enjoyed taking part in the Men’s Group and the Growing with Christ S.S. class.
While our hearts are broken, we know Joe is now free of pain. The family is very grateful to the many doctors and medical staff that cared for Joe at CoxHealth and Phoenix Home Care and Hospice. A special thank you to Dr. Robert Ellis who guided us through the cancer journey and became a friend. Joe was blessed and thankful for all the support from friends, family and church.
Joe will be inurned at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery with military honors. On Friday July 5th a service will be held at Campbell United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM and a reception at Twin Oaks Country Club from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
