Joyce Powell (nee Record), 72, went to see Jesus on April 8th, 2025, from her home in Springfield, MO. Born in Ozark, Missouri, she lived a life filled with love, laughter, and an unyielding passion for family. Her family moved out of Missouri for a short time, but made their way back by the time she was in grade school. She graduated from Glendale High School in the early 70’s.
Through many life experiences, she spent 20 years as a dedicated nurse and later transitioned to a career as a paralegal for 10 years. She earned two bachelor’s degrees with honors, showcasing her dedication to education and personal growth. After retiring in 2007, she poured her heart into her children and grandchildren, always putting family first.
As a single mother, she devoted her life to raising her two children, Heather and Travis. She let God be her guide and led them on the path they should go. They never wandered very far from her loving home. When she received the gift of grandchildren, she was able to help raise them too. Proud of what God had pulled her through, she made sure that her children and grandchildren knew of Jesus’ love for them and saw them come to know him.
In 2010, Joyce inherited her mother’s genealogy research. She uncovered and documented hundreds of families dating back to the 1400s, eventually publishing two books that will serve as a lasting legacy of her dedication.
Joyce had an incredible sense of humor and a resilient spirit. She believed in finding joy and humor in every situation. Her warmth, wisdom, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her family finds comfort in knowing that her story, like the countless ones she uncovered, will continue to be told for generations to come.
Joyce is preceded in death by her father and mother, Otis and Jean (Berry) Record, and beloved uncle and aunt, Sam Record and Lesbie (Bradford) Record. Joyce is survived by her children, Heather and Travis and a granddaughter, Mandy of Springfield. She is also survived by two brothers, Neal and Terry Record, three “sisters”: Feonia, Shirley, and Janice; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and one uncle, Roger Record and wife of Cape Girardeau.
The family requests, following Joyce’s wishes, that those that join them at the graveside service do so wearing what they would be most comfortable in. Please come and celebrate the life of Joyce Powell, wearing jeans and a tshirt, just as Joyce would want.
Services have been entrusted to Greenlawn Funeral Home East.
