Leslie Ray Gritzmaker, known to many as Les or Butch, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 83. Born on August 18, 1942, in Springfield to Lorene and Cooney Gritzmaker, Les grew up in nearby Billings and spent most of his life in the Springfield community he loved so dearly.

Les was a student at Drury College, and co-owned and worked at Anderson & Son Trucking, where he built lasting relationships and a reputation for integrity and hard work. He was a devoted partner, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, known for his boundless generosity and his remarkable ability to make everyone feel seen, heard, and valued.

Les lived a life of quiet compassion, offering help through simple acts of kindness that left a lasting impact on countless lives. He was deeply committed to his family, always offering unwavering support and encouragement in their endeavors.

A passionate advocate for education, Les served tirelessly on the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools Board, championing opportunities for students and educators alike. He was also a proud supporter of the arts, actively involved with Springfield Little Theatre, and found great joy in traveling the world with friends and family. His love for cars and motorcycles added a spark of adventure to his life.

Les was preceded in death by his beloved partner, Virgil V. Anderson. He is survived by his twin sister, Melba (Layton) Lemke; his nephew, Kevin Lemke; nieces, Nichole (Dan) Baker and Ilsa (Josh) Eischens; his son, Daniel (Vivian) Bergen; and his cherished grandchildren, Christian and Kyle.

A private memorial service will be held with family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools in honor of Les’s enduring commitment to education and community.
