LeVerne L. Metz, 103, of Springfield, MO, peacefully entered the presence of the Lord on April 3rd, 2023, surrounded by family.
LeVerne was a beloved Christian, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and friend to many. His infinite wisdom, stories, compassion, and love will be greatly missed.
LeVerne’s faith, family, and country were the most important to him and his greatest treasures.
Born in Jerome, Iowa, on November 4th, 1919, to Kyle and Lavinia Metz. As a young boy, LeVerne found a love for reading and football. He and his sister, Fern, grew up close together, mostly in Iowa.
LeVerne’s first job at the age of 8 was cleaning the butcher’s block. While he held many jobs throughout his lifetime, he retired from the United States Postal Services of Springfield, MO, in 1987 after 27 years of service.
LeVerne is a World War II Veteran and has voted in every presidential election since 1940.
LeVerne and Katherine were wed in 1939 and had three daughters. After Katherine’s death, LeVerne wed Gladys in 1974 and gained a daughter and son.
LeVerne is preceded in death by his mother and father, Lavinia and Kyle Metz, sister Fern Metz, first wife Katherine Metz, second wife Gladys Lawhon Metz, daughters Barbara (Paul) Flueckiger, Nancy (Richard) Brown, Tanya Amyx, grandsons Timothy Bumgarner, Rob Lawhon, Eric Flueckiger, Joseph Martinez.
He is survived by daughter Kathy (Don) Bumgarner, son Bruce Lawhon, son-in-law Cleon Amyx; grandchildren Richard Flueckiger, Gayle Flueckiger, Russell Cobb, Gwen (David) Stevens, Pam (Jose) Martinez, Kathy (Patrick) Morrison, Stephen (Heather) Laughlin, Steve (Ashley) Bumgarner, Brooke Bumgarner, Noah (Kim) Lawhon, Wade (Jessica) Lawhon, Candance (Ryan) Stoll; many great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Memorial Services will be at East Sunshine Church of Christ on Monday, April 10th, 2023, at 10 am. Military services in the parking lot with lunch provided afterward.
In honor of LeVerne, the family has asked for donations to be made to Sheltering Ministries at East Sunshine Church of Christ, Fair Haven Children’s Home, or the Tim Bumgarner Memorial Fund at Legacy Bank.
