Marilyn J. (Hendrick) Sweeton, 75, of Springfield, passed away Wednesday morning, February 16, 2022 in her home following a brief battle with cancer. She was born September 5, 1946 in St. Louis, MO.
“Mernie” grew up in Long Beach, CA and graduated from Millikan High School in 1964. She worked at Hunt-Wesson for nearly a decade, played the organ in her church, and in 1973 married the love of her life. The family relocated to Springfield in 1978 where she raised her two children and opened her home to countless others, providing daycare to families for more than 35 years.
She loved musicals, was a connoisseur of Mexican food and reigned supreme as the “Garage Sale Queen”. With a sweet, modest disposition she took many by surprise when she displayed her silly sense of humor or occasionally broke out the dance moves. She also showed us what compassion and generosity look like, always ready to offer an encouraging word to a friend or a helping hand to a neighbor in need.
A devoted daughter, sister, aunt, wife, and mother, she perhaps cherished her role of grandmother the most. “Nana” was a fixture at ballgames, recitals, parties … you name it. In more recent years her family expanded even further to include wonderful friends at Ridgecrest Baptist Church and The Meyer Center.
Marilyn touched many lives in many ways, but the aim was always the same – to show her love, exemplifying that of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ethel; and her husband, Paul.
Marilyn is survived by her son Greg and wife Laura (Winn) Sweeton of Strafford, MO; daughter Julie and husband Brad Vaughan of Springfield, MO; five grandchildren: Nathan, Katie, Anna, Alex and Isaiah; two sisters: Susan Smith and Judy Hartley; and two brothers: Bob and Steve Hendrick; many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 28 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East with burial at Holland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Springfield Little Theatre (please designate in honor of Marilyn J. Sweeton).
