Mary Helen Hurt, 89, of Strafford, passed away peacefully in her home with her daughter Cheryl and her devoted dog, Puppett, by her side.
Helen devoted much of her life to serving her community. She volunteered at the Tourist Information Center, the Hot Rods of Springfield at the fairgrounds, and the Airport Information Center. In 1965, after having twins, she founded the Twins Club in Springfield, Missouri – a group that brought families together and created lasting connections.
Helen is survived by her 4 daughters: Cheryl Matlack, Sharon Hurt, Sheila Davis, and Melinda Gastil; 2 sons, Gilbert Villianuava and Danny Villianuava; Helen’s granddaughters Felisha Richardson and Keyra Carlton and her great-grandsons Jarrod Richarson and Kai Carlton and numerous friends and family.
She is preceded in death her husband, son in law John Matlack and by her son Robert.
Helen retired from GE after 50 years of dedicated service. Those who not only worked with but also knew Helen will remember her for her bright, endearing smile, her warm laugh, and the wonderfully quirky personality that made everyone around her feel welcome. She found joy in helping people and built many cherished friendships through her volunteer work. Helen’s kindness and spirit touched countless lives, and she will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Foundation.
A ceremony honoring Helen’s life will be held on December 15 at 12:00 PM at Greenlawn Funeral Home North, with a graveside burial service to follow at Rivermonte Cemetery.
