We celebrate the life and legacy of Neil Thorton Hanzlick, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished friend who passed away peacefully from natural causes on June 30, 2024, at the age of 90. Neil was born on July 22, 1933, in Tennessee, to George and Margaret Hanzlick. He was born the second oldest of five children born to the couple. The family moved to Hoisington, Kansas while Neil was still young.
Growing up in Hoisington he was always known for his strong work ethic and love for his family. After graduating from Hoisington High School, he pursued a degree in physical therapy from Kansas State University, showcasing his passion for helping others. He was also a part of the baseball team while continuing his education. Neil’s career led him to Burge Hospital, later known as Cox, where he met the love of his life, Gladys Christine “Chris” Stevens, who worked as a medical transcriptionist. Their love story blossomed, and they were married. Their family was complete when Neil adopted, Christine’s son, Greg. The couple shared 55 wonderful years together before Chris’ passing in 2017.
Neil’s hobby was restoring antique cars. He was active in the Model “A” and Model “T” Antique Car Club and enjoyed driving on tours with his wife. He also cherished time with his son, showing him valuable skills to hunt and fish. They were able to take many trips including a fishing trip to Canada to bond over their shared hobby. Neil also found peace with Chris at his private country cabin near Bolivar, Missouri.
He furthered his career as a physical therapist in 1963 accepting a position for the Federal Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri. He was especially successful, and eventually retired as Assistant Warden for the facility.
Neil’s memory will forever be remembered by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will continue to inspire us all. May we find solace in the memories we shared with him and carry his spirit in our hearts always.
He was met in heaven by his parents, George and Margaret Hanzlick; his wife, Chris Hanzlick; his older sister, Shirley; and a younger brother, Bill.
Neil is survived his son, Greg Hanzlick, of Springfield, Missouri; his granddaughter, Olivia Hanzlick; two brothers, George Hanzlick, Jr. and his wife Tracey, of Russell, Kansas and Dennis Hanzlick and his wife Christiana of Germany; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Neil’s wishes were to be cremated with a celebration of his life at a later date.
