Pao Thao or Txwjpov Thoj was the first and last of his kind on earth—the one and only. A humble man who led a simple life yet carried within him a profound reverence for God and an unshakable inner faith. A father and grandfather.
His remarkable journey began on July 7, 1945, in Laos. Amidst the turmoil and tragedy of war, he became a refugee in Thailand. Through steadfast faith and perseverance, he eventually made his way to the United States in pursuit of a better life. That long and courageous journey—marked by quiet resilience and unwavering hope—came to a peaceful close on April 29, 2025.
Pao Thao lived with a grounded awareness of life’s hardships and blessings. Though not one for imagination or comedy, he possessed a natural wit that often made others laugh or smile. As a soldier in the Secret Army under General Vang Pao, he fought with bravery alongside American forces during the war in Laos. Wounded in battle, he bore the scars of his sacrifice—a testament to his courage and commitment to the ideals of freedom and democracy.
He was a precious gift from God, born to Ntxhwchoj Thoj and Mais Yaaj. They bore Xaab Thoj, Ntsuabxwm Thoj, Txab Thoj, and Nchaivntxawg Thoj, along with two daughters, Maiv Thoj and Ntxawm Thoj. From his father’s first wife, Lug Vaaj, came Vaaj Thoj, Tswb Thoj, and Mim Thoj. Altogether, Pao had nine siblings.
Pao Thao was married to Maiv Kwm. He is survived by his youngest brother, Nchaivntxawg Thoj; his beloved son, Charles Cawv Thao; his daughter-in-law, Mai Lor Thao; and his cherished grandson, Theophilus Ntxhwchoj Thao. His legacy of strength, faith, and enduring love continues to live on through them—and in the hearts of all who knew him.
Arrangements are under the compassionate direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home North in Springfield, Missouri.
