Philip “PJ” Arthur, was born on December 15, 1934, in Springfield, Missouri, and passed away on March 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and lifelong friendships.
PJ was known as a kind and funny man who genuinely enjoyed people. He loved his family deeply and treasured time spent with friends. One of his greatest joys was traveling with his beloved wife, Carrolyn. Wherever he went, PJ had a way of making others feel welcome, often with a smile, a story, or a bit of humor.
His faith in Jesus Christ was central to his life. From a young age, PJ was devoted to sharing that faith with others. He accepted Christ at High Street Baptist Church on June 9, 1946, and was baptized on June 30, 1946. Throughout his life, he remained active in church communities. First Baptist Church of Springfield, where he served as an Adult Department Director, and later Second Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a greeter. PJ was never shy about telling others about Jesus and lived out his faith in both word and action.
PJ graduated from Central High School in 1953 and began a long and dedicated career with the Frisco Railroad, where he worked for 42 years. He was hired on December 16, 1953, while attending Draughons Business College. During his career, he spent ten years in the General Office in St. Louis. He later continued his railroad career with Burlington Northern Railroad.
In addition to his professional work, PJ proudly served in the United States Air Force. His service included assignments at Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, and a tour of duty in Wiesbaden, Germany.
PJ was also deeply involved in professional and civic organizations. He held multiple leadership roles within the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks Labor Organization, including Chaplain, Local Chairman, and Vice General Chairman. He was ultimately elected General Chairman of the Frisco System Board of Adjustment, representing members across a nine state region. He was also a former member of the Masonic Order, achieving the level of 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite, and participated in the Toastmasters Club.
He married Sally Ann Soapes on October 24, 1977. She preceded him in death on April 12, 1994. Sally and Carrolyn Self had been lifelong friends, having gone to school together and remained close over the years. On January 1, 1995, PJ married Carrolyn with whom he shared 31 years of love, travel, and companionship.
PJ is survived by his sons, Michael Arthur and Samuel Arthur, Sam’s wife Christy; grandchildren Jade Cloud; Madison Arthur, Brooklyn Arthur, and Hudson Arthur; several great grandchildren; and Carrolyn’s children, James Hayes II of Chandler, Arizona, and Brianna Hayes of New York City, New York; and Brianna’s daughters, Mary Katherine, Johanna Rose, and Rebecca Joan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert “Bud” and Alta Arthur; brother, Howard Arthur and sister-in-law, Madge Arthur; and aunt and uncle, Rual and Thelma Miller.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on April 10, 2026, at Greenlawn North Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri, with a graveside service with honors to follow.
PJ will be remembered for his steady faith, his love for people, his sense of humor, and the way he pointed others to Christ. His life was a testimony of quiet strength, devotion, and grace.
