Russell W. Burney, 98, of Springfield, MO passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, MO.
He was one of “The Forgotten 500” from the book of the same name, shot down behind enemy lines and survived the greatest rescue mission of World War II. He was a hero to all of us.

He enjoyed his retirement; traveling with “Buttercup” (Mary Helen) to many National Parks and watching the family grow at the lake cabin.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill; and grandson, Lucas R. Burney. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Helen; daughter, Pat Seal and husband Jim; son, Steve Burney and wife Pam; grandchildren, Mike Seal, Beth (Burney) Doles, Marcus Seal; and three great grandchildren.
