Allen J. Bowerman, 83, of Springfield, formerly of Lansing, Mich., passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012. He was born on Feb. 9, 1929, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to Gideon and Carrie Bowerman.
He graduated from Sault Ste. Marie High School and later earned an associate’s degree in accounting from Lansing Community College.
He met Ruby Hanson when her brother Clarence was pastoring at the Assembly of God church in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. They were married on Aug. 4, 1962, in Alma Center, Wis., Ruby’s hometown.
Allen worked as head clerk/accountant at Nash Garage and as a civilian contractor in auditing, accounting, and payroll at Kincheloe Air Force Base. He was a Federal auditor in Tawas, Mich. and an auditor in the Department of the Treasury of the State of Michigan.
They had two children, Karen and Kevin, who both attended Evangel University. Allen was an Evangel College Councilman and later part of the Evangel University Family and Friends organization. They enjoyed coming to the campus for various events.
The Bowermans were active in the Calvary Assembly of God church and later at Mt. Hope Assembly of God church, both in Lansing, Mich. They moved to Springfield, Mo., in 1994. He and Ruby attended Evangel Temple where he was a faithful usher, greeter and counter. They were active in the Seniors group at Evangel Temple. They were thrilled to be close to Branson and all the activities in the area.
He and Ruby literally traveled the world including China, Russia, Australia/New Zealand, Europe, Ireland, as well as major trips in the United States, Canada and Latin America. A special joy to them was attending the Gospel Quartet Convention each fall in Louisville, Ky. Allen also enjoyed gardening and photography.
For many years, Allen’s mother lived with them when they were in Lansing. He and Ruby were dedicated and cheerful caregivers for her.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby in April 2010; his parents; and sisters Margaret and Ethel.
He is survived by his children, Karen Bowerman and her fiancé, Larry Ferguson (Omaha, Neb.), Kevin and Christie Bowerman (Springfield, Mo.) and three grandchildren — Daniel, Benjamin and Adeline Bowerman; brother and sister-in-law Elmer and Dorothy of Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Allen was also close to the many relatives from Ruby’s side of the family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Evangel Temple Christian Center 2020 E. Battlefield Springfield, MO. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Springfield, MO. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, May 14, 2012, in the Funeral home.
