Alive Alfred Gamble, 87, went to be with his wife and mother for Mother’s Day on May 12, 2012. Visitation will be 9:30am with services at 10:30am Saturday, May 19 at the Greenlawn Funeral Home North Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions be made to the various military funds caring for returning veterans.
Alvie was born August 21, 1924 in Springfield MO to Lena Buckner and Alfred Gamble. He joined the Army at 17 and is a World War II veteran. He served in the European Theatre and also the Philippines. He married Betty Jo Schmittou on June 1, 1947, and had three surviving children. Alvie retired from Montgomery Wards as their Display Manager in the late 80’s. He was dedicated and enjoyed the VFW 7900 in Martin City and served as Commander numerous times. Alvie volunteered at the VA Hospital and was an active member at the American Legion. He was active in the Boy Scouts and an avid hunter and fisherman, but most of all, he was a dedicated father, grandfather, and loyal friend. Alvie was the most selfless person we know.
Alvie was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister Louise. He is survived by his children, Jo Nell Gamble Aulgur, Rebecca Balestrere (Frank), and John Gamble (Gloria), five grandchildren, Jeffrey Aulgur (Stephanie), David Gamble, Stacy Higgins (Brian), Ashley Balestrere Marlow (Daniel), and Joseph Balestrere, and nine great-grandchildren, and his sister, Maxine Chapman of Joplin, MO. He also leaves many dear friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Alvie lived in assisted living at Foxwood Springs in Raymore, Mo, with many dedicated caregivers and friends. The family cannot give enough commendations to the wonderful staff at the VA Hospital in Kansas City.
