Alvin Eugene “Gene” Stringfield, 89, Springfield, Mo, passed away December 6, 2011, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield. He was born April 25, 1922, in Caruthersville, Mo, to Perry and Ethel (Meddlen) Stringfield.
Gene married Melvina M. “Roxy” Byers on March 5, 1944, in St. Louis, Mo, and to this union a daughter, Rosalie, was born. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, receiving a Presidential Citation for heroic deeds during service. In civilian life he worked with the U.S. Customs Service as a Special Agent. Gene was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and enjoyed making jewelry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Roxy, brothers Carl and Joseph Stringfield, and sisters Dorothy Gleason and Lucille Wood. Gene is survived by his daughter Rosalie Reetz and her husband Roger, Springfield, a grandson William Reetz and his wife Pam, Sagle, Id, a brother Frank and his wife Margie, Brownstown, Il, sisters Peggy Koen, Farmington, Mo, and Lois Jean Huemoeller, Saint Paul, Mn.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., December 14, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home South. Inurnment will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, with military honors.
