Betty Jean Little, age 96 years and 11 months, Springfield, went home to her Lord Jesus on October 28, 2020 at Cox South Hospital.
Betty was born on Thanksgiving Day November 29th, 1923 in Springfield, Missouri to Charles and Matilda (Gabe) Helfrecht. She was the fifth of six children.
Betty lived her entire life in Springfield. She graduated from Springfield Senior High School in 1941 and went to Draughon’s Business College. She worked at several banks and savings and loans and for Nordberg for 16 years. She retired in 1980.
Betty met Homer Little at the Broadway and Madison Church of Christ in 1950. After only two months of courtship they were married at the church one Sunday morning before worship services. They were married for 53 years and had two children, Kathy and Nelson.
Betty and Homer were charter members of the East Grand Church of Christ. They loved the church very much. They were at the very first church service when the doors opened in 1957, and the couple took out a loan to buy the songbooks for the congregation. Betty was the last surviving charter member.
During retirement, Betty and Homer enjoyed golfing with friends, an annual vacation to Padre Island, Texas, and trips to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Betty enjoyed gardening, taking walks, and especially enjoyed going to Bingo in her later years where she made many friends.
Betty was known not only for her sweetness, but also for her strength and fighting spirit. Although afflicted with painful arthritis, Betty rarely complained. She knew how to respectfully assert herself especially when it came to defending her family and friends. Many people told her family how sweet she was.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Homer, all five of her siblings and a special niece. She is survived by her children Kathy Moroney (Mike) of Ozark and Nelson of Springfield and many extended family members. Her family and friends will treasure memories of her kindness and Christlike example. Comments by her friends say it all:
“Betty is the strongest woman I know. She is my hero.”
“If there were more Bettys in the world it would be a better place.”
“Betty was my very favorite person.”
Cremation arrangements are under the care of Greenlawn Funeral Home East. There will be a visitation to celebrate Betty’s life at East Grand Church of Christ, Monday November 9th, from 4:30 — 6:30.
