It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn Joyce (CJ) Hankins, who left this world peacefully on December 13, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on August 8, 1954, CJ was a beloved daughter, a devoted sister, and a cherished friend to many.
CJ’s life was defined by her relentless pursuit of knowledge and her commitment to service. Later in life, she embarked on a journey back to college at Missouri State University with her Bachelor of Science Degree which laid the groundwork for a meaningful career. For many years, she proudly served as an Internal Revenue Agent with the US Treasury, where her dedication to her work and her unwavering integrity made a lasting impression on colleagues and those she assisted.
Her family was the heart of her world. She found great comfort and happiness in their company, and she always made sure that the time they shared together felt special. This deep devotion extended to her chosen family of over 30 years, including her dear friends Larry and Connie Wall.
Beyond her professional life, she shared a unique and joyful bond with her former colleagues from the Internal Revenue Service. This group of friends met faithfully once a month for lunch. These gatherings were a highlight of her retirement. She cherished the camaraderie of her fellow agents and the lasting connection they all shared.
Some of her happiest moments were spent on the water, whether sailing across the lake with her husband, Dan, or soaking in the sun to the sounds of Jimmy Buffett. She embraced the ‘island lifestyle’ no matter where she was, finding peace whenever she was close to the water. Back on shore, her heart belonged to their three beloved pets, who were their constant companions and a source of endless joy.
At Messiah Lutheran Church, she was known for her faithful stewardship and dedication. She took great pride in serving on the Finance Committee, viewing her work not just as a task, but as a vital ministry in service to the congregation and the Lord.
CJ leaves behind her dear mother, Joyce Schearf (Ted) and loving sisters, Suzie Nau (Kris), Jayne Davis (Chris), as well as her beloved nieces and nephews: Erin Haney (Matt), Kelsey Bailey (Jordan), Garrett Nau (Kara), and great-niece and nephews.
CJ was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dan Hankins, her father, Keith Southard.
