Charles “Charlie” Denney, 74, Springfield, passed away July 20, 2011 in his son’s home after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
He graduated from Central High School in 1955. For over 30 years he was the Greenskeeper at Horton Smith Municipal Golf Course and later worked at Payne Stewart Golf Course. He ultimately retired from the Springfield Greene County Park Board. Charlie was a great golfer and well known in the area. He loved all sports, fishing and singing.
Survivors include his children, Marty Denney of Springfield and Sherry Denney-Hopkins, EdD and husband Bill of St. Louis; grandson William Charles “Chaz” Denney of Springfield; brothers Eddie Denney and family of Memphis, TN and Buddy Denney of Springfield; former wife Peggy Mahan; many cousins, golfing buddies and good friends.
Charlie will be cremated and a celebration of life gathering will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2011 from 2-4 pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Friends and family are encouraged to wear their “golf attire” in memory of Charlie’s love for golf.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to your favorite charity.
