Clay H. Payne, age 92, of Springfield passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Clay was born November 5, 1918, in Eldon, Missouri and was a resident of Springfield for a period of 65 years. During World War II, he served in the Navy for a period of four years. After attending Drury College and Southwest Missouri State University, where he majored in Business Administration, Clay began a highly successful career in real estate.
Clay achieved many awards as a realtor and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as he helped many people and made many friends throughout the years.
As a member of the Greater Springfield Board of Realtors, Clay was elected President of Multilist. He was also given statewide recognition as salesperson of the year.
Clay actively participated in many organizations such as The Springfield Rotary Club, The Shrine Temple and the Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his civic affiliations, Clay made many charitable contributions to various charities such as the American Cancer Society, Drury College, and St. Jude.
Clay was proud of his charter membership in Twin Oaks Country Club and The Tower Club where he gave and attended many parties.
During his final stay in St. John’s Hospital, Clay was visited by various members of his church, First & Calvary, where he had been a member for over 55 years. The spiritual help and extension of friendship was greatly appreciated.
Clay is survived by his wife, Barbara Valene, a real estate broker and his two beloved puppies, Lucky and Muffin, “the kids”.
To all who know him, Clay will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, May 20, 2011, at First & Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 East Cherry Street, Springfield, MO.
