Dan Thomas Mawhiney, age 69, of Pleasant Hope, MO passed from this life on Friday morning, December 11, 2015 at Cox Hospital in Springfield, MO.
Dan, the son of Thomas and Louise Mawhiney, was born October 12, 1946 in Joplin, MO. He grew up in the Ozarks and graduated from Pleasant Hope High School. Dan proudly served in the United States Army for over 20 years including a tour in Vietnam. He married Ruth Gibbs on December 13, 1969 in Washington DC and had three children. He retired from Cox Health System after working over 20 years as a surgical technician. Dan had a passion for learning and graduated from Drury University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. He enjoyed working in his wood shop and going to auctions with his wife. Dan could, and would, talk to anyone. He was charismatic with a warm, inviting smile.
Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Mawhiney. Dan is survived by his wife of 46 years Ruth, three children, Tom Mawhiney and wife Valerie of St. Charles; Patty Shoemaker and husband Michael of Springfield; and David Mawhiney and wife Jennifer of Springfield; his father Thomas Mawhiney, his sister, Carrie Ann Agee, 8 grandchildren, and his extended family. Dan was a loving father, husband, and grandfather.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, December 14th at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. A graveside service will be held at Vaughn Cemetery in Greenfield, MO at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 15th. Memorial donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
