It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Derek Sean Kniepfel, age 34. He was a cherished son, loving brother, and fun uncle. He was born October 10th, 1990, and died on July 11th, 2025, in his hometown of Springfield, Missouri.
Derek grew up with a fascination for history. As a kid, he loved to play soccer and baseball. Derek was an outdoorsman. He would often fish, camp, hike, and participate in target practice with his buddies. He was a craftsman at heart, who spent time working with his hands developing his construction skills. Customers wrote compliments for Derek’s hard work and friendly personality. People loved his beautiful, infectious smile. Derek liked to cook delicious, flavorful food. He was the sauce king, with an ever-growing collection of sauces and seasonings. In his spare time, he enjoyed finding treasures at his favorite thrift stores. He had a big heart in serving others and never knew a stranger. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.
Derek is survived by his devoted parents, Michele and Gary Kniepfel, sister Lauren Kowacich and husband Brandon, brother Hunter Kniepfel and wife Addison, sister Mikayla Kniepfel, brother Aaron Kniepfel, nieces Brienne Kowacich, Kylin Kowacich, Hannah Kowacich, nephew Hayes Kowacich, grandparents Joan Rice, Mickie and Bill Haase, and Sharon Gaston. He is preceded in death by his brother Matthew Kniepfel, grandfather Mike Gaston, and grandfather Harry Rice.
Derek Sean will be remembered long after this life on earth. May his soul forever rest in peace. A memorial service will be held in his honor at Greenlawn Funeral Home North on Saturday, August 16th, from 10:00am to 12:00pm.
