Dorothy Evelyn Armstrong, 92, went to her heavenly home on August, 7, 2009. She was born July 22, 1917 in Peoria, Illinois. Dorothy earned a Masters Degree from University of Missouri at Columbia and taught elementary school for over 42 years. She loved children and in her early years organized one of the first Kiwanis baseball teams in Springfield. Her teaching years included several years of working as a Reading Consultant for Ginn Publishing Company in Chicago and teaching adult education courses at Drury College and University of Missouri. After retirement she enjoyed traveling. She visited more than 40 counties including Russia, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Although she loved to travel she still remembered her good times with the children and still occasionally visited with those who contacted her. Dorothy was still active in Senior Citizens and still took her morning walks as long as she could. She leaves behind a devoted distant cousin, Rowena Freeman (Nashville, Tenn) and many close long time friends. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 12, at 10 a.m. in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Greenlawn Funeral Home South. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield.
