Dorothy Jane Ryder age 84 of Reeds Spring, MO passed away at home, Sunday, January 9, 2011 from complications of leukemia. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM , Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Our Lady of the Cove Catholic church in Kimberling City. Burial will be in Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, MO at 2:00 PM with full military honors.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 5:00 P.M. with Rosary following, on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Greenlawn Funeral Home-Branson, MO.
Dorothy was born on January 29, 1926 in Providence, RI, She was preceded in deathby her parents, Frank and Alice Ryder and six siblings She is survived by her brother, Edward Ryder OF Naples, FL.
She graduated High School from St.. Mary’s Acadamy of Visitation in 1943. She graduated St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1947 (both schools in Providence, RI)
Dorothy served in the US Navy Nurse Corps. from 1955 until 1975. Retiring with the rank of Commander. She served in Viet Nam as chief nurse in Subic Bay, Philippine Islands among her 11 other duty station. She took up Japanese cooking at Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan and deep sea fishing in Key West, Fl. At Camp Pendleton she enjoyed serving with the Marines and took up golf on the beautiful golf courses in Southern California.
Throughout her life she has been a devout catholic, serving the Catholic Church as Eucharistic minister and she took great pleasure in being a Lector at catholic mass. She also volunteered with projects like yard sales, thrift shops and church rummage sales. During her 4 years living in Annandale, Va., she served as a docent at Smithsonian Institute.
Dorothy’s hobbies were bowling, golf and travel. She visited Tasmania Island, Australia and made several trips to Ireland. Dorothy loved her life and lived it to the fullest.
She cherished her friends and was comforted by her faith, she will be missed.
