At 96 years old, Earleen Shalz leaves behind a legacy of independence, determination, laughter, and, above all, love for her family.
Earleen moved to Springfield from California in the early 1970s and worked in administration for the Springfield Police Department until her retirement in 1992. Retirement didn’t keep her still for long, as she went on to spend nearly another career working at WIC, where she stayed until age 90. She was fiercely independent well into her 90s, until a stroke at age 94 brought some of that independence to a close.
Earleen loved family game and craft nights, laughing with loved ones, and spending time with family and friends. She adored cats, including her beloved black cat, Colorado, and enjoyed plants, flowers, and appreciating the simple beauty of nature. And when it came to music, Willie Nelson was always a welcome favorite, but her taste was very diverse.
Strong-willed, generous, and full of life, Earleen leaves behind countless memories and an example of independence that will not be forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Clara Hamby; her first born son, Mark, who was born sleeping, her son Tim Shalz; her sister, Beth Ferreira; and her brother, Johnny Hamby.
She is survived by her son, Scott Shalz; her daughter, Lisa Shalz; her granddaughters, Misty Wiggins and Molli Shearin and her husband, Austin; and her great-granddaughter, Annika Wiggins.
