Annie, I can't explain the depths of feelings the last few weeks. I hurt for your entire family, especially Jude and Matt. It truly hasn't fully sunk in, and I know it won't until you aren't physically there at convocation in August. Your office was an unfiltered humorous safe space to let it out, you had a listening fellow parental ear when I was going through the trenches of single parenthood, and you were the advocate I can only dream of becoming. I am better a person for having called you a friend. I never forgot when you let an outwardly confident, but inwardly unsure faculty member know that he would make a great leader in this weird world of Higher Education. It came at the exact right time. Although you followed it up with some additional comment about us not needing another white male in a leadership position :). I doubt you would have remembered that conversation, as it was one of the countless many where you lifted others up. But I think of it now when I see that nervous anxiety in others that I know will grow into greatness and I make sure to vocalize how I feel. I remember how it made me feel. But of course I withhold the additional comments on the patriarchy. A wise person once said "The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit." I didn’t think I would experience the shade without you from one of the untold amount of trees you planted. But I will do my best to take the lessons, plant more trees, and never forget the person you were to me. Robert

To Annie's family you have my deepest sympathy. No words can describe the horrible loss and sadness you must be feeling right now. Annie was a bright light that was put out way too soon. I was lucky enough to be one of Annie's students and will always remember her as a smart, honest, witty and passionate person. Her family was always in her thoughts even when she was standing in the front of a classroom. R.I.P. Annie, me and Gabby are sharing a Coke and thinking about you. Thank you for always being there and being a true inspiration to everyone. We will see you on the other side.
