Forrest Lee Asbell, 88, passed away Friday, November 25, 2011, at Mount Vernon, MO, due to health complications. He was born in Aldrich, MO, February 17, 1923. Lee served as a Marine in WWII. He enlisted July 14, 1944, and his service ended July 24, 1946. At the time of his discharge he had made the rank of Corporal with special qualifications as a mortar crewman. His service was in the Pacific Area from November 13, 1944 to July 10, 1946. He participated in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from February 19, 1945 to March 16, 1945. He also participated in the Occupation of Japan September 22, 1945 to October 9, 1945, under the direction of Capt. H.G. Todd. Lee drove a truck for some time and then went to work for Brown Derby which was when he made a lifelong friendship with Mr. John Morris. After years Lee became the grounds man of the Morris property and that was his last employment until he became ill.
Lee was preceded in death by one son, Forrest Jefferson, his parents, George and Mary Asbell, one brother, Andy Asbell, sisters, Georgia Hinkle and Willa Mendoca, nephew, Tommy Clemons, brothers-in-law, Elmer Hinkle, Tony Mendoca, and Robert Clemons, and longtime friend and companion, Martha Crawford.
He is survived by sons, Paul Layne and wife Gracie of Rogersville, Mark Randall and wife Patty, Springfield, Anthony Wallace of California, and Darin MacDonald of Springfield; grandchildren, Mark Andrew, Aimee Renae, and John, step-granddaughter, Velma, four great-grand children, three step great-grandchildren, one step great-great-granddaughter, a sister Rose Mary Clemons, three nieces and three nephews, several cousins and friends. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him. On behalf of the Asbell family we would like to thank all of those who loved and cared for Lee when he really needed it, thank you.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at Greenlawn Funeral Home South.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at Bona Church of Christ with a visitation one hour prior to service, under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home South.
