Gary Evan Thornton, a beacon of warmth and kindness, gracefully departed from this world on January 24, 2024, surrounded by love, at his home in Springfield, Missouri. Born on July 8, 1942, in Independence, Kansas, Gary was the beloved son of Evan and Lucille (McGuire) Thornton.
A graduate of Cherryvale High School, Gary’s journey continued with a track and field scholarship leading him to Coffeyville for college. His thirst for knowledge propelled him to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Wichita State University in 1964.
Gary’s love story with Sandy Potts began with a serendipitous meeting at Brown’s Grill in Wichita and blossomed into a beautiful union on June 26, 1966. Together, they embarked on a journey that spanned across California before finding their forever home in Springfield, Missouri, in 1982. Their commitment to each other and their three sons was unwavering, their presence a guiding light in their family’s lives, deeply involved in church and school activities.
Gary’s passion for sports was infectious, stemming from his own athletic endeavors in track, basketball, and baseball, including a notable stint with the AAA baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies. His love affair with baseball ignited in 1949 when a young Gary witnessed Mickey Mantle’s prowess in minor league baseball in Independence, Kansas. As his sons grew, Gary found joy in melding his love for sports with his knack for numbers, serving as the steadfast scorekeeper at their games, cheering them on with unwavering support and pride.
In the gentle embrace of eternity, Gary reunites with his beloved wife Sandy and daughter Michelle, finding solace in their eternal reunion. His legacy lives on through his devoted sons: Mick (Tracy), Andy (Sarah), and David (Sarah), who continue to carry his spirit forward. Gary’s adoration extends to his cherished grandchildren: Darion, Samiya, Tyrek, Jericho, Shaq, Jamison, and Silas, each a testament to his boundless love and devotion.
In the hearts of those who knew him, Gary leaves behind an indelible imprint of warmth, laughter, and compassion. His sisters Trudy, Cinda, and Linda, along with a host of cherished relatives and friends, mourn his passing while cherishing the memories of a life lived with profound love and purpose.
A private family celebration of Gary’s life will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to support youth sports at YMCA Camp Wakanda (campwakonda.org). Gary’s legacy of love will continue to illuminate our lives, a beacon of hope and joy in our hearts.
Rest in peace, dear Gary, knowing that your love continues to ripple through the lives of all who were blessed to know you. Until we meet again in the arms of eternity, may your spirit soar among the heavens, forever cherished and deeply missed.
