George E. Smith, 85 of Springfield passed away in his home on March 3, 2011. Officer Smith retired from the United States Navy after a 31 year career of distinguished service, ultimately achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served as an Aviation Machinist in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Billie Sue Smith; one sister and two brothers.
He is survived by his sons, Michael and Lynn; and daughters, Catherine and Georgia. Officer Smith has also left a legacy including seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held in Greenlawn Funeral Home East from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m on Sunday, March 6. A full honors military service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 7 in the Springfield Veterans Cemetery at 5201 S. Southwood Road.
