Georgia Housel Brunner, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012 in Springfield, MO. She was born August 19, 1927 in Madison, WI.
After attending the Univ. of Wisconsin, Georgia worked for the HEW Department, based in Washington, D.C., where she met Gerald Brunner. Their travels took them to 48 states. They became engaged in Denver, CO and were married in 1949 in Salt Lake City, UT. After moving back to Gerald’s hometown of Springfield, Georgia became a Deputy Sheriff for the Women’s Division in Greene County. After leaving the sheriff’s office, she was Administrative Assistant for the Developmental Department at Drury College for several years. Georgia left Drury in 1968 to begin her stellar career with Southwest Missouri State College, now MSU, where she was the Administrative Assistant for the Department of History for 22 years. In a career she dearly loved, Georgia assisted up to 20 faculty members in the Department. Those that worked with and knew Georgia recall her intelligence, loyalty and sharp wit. She retired with Emeritus Status from her position in 1990, allowing Gerry and Georgia to spend their winters in Southern Texas for the next 10 years.
Georgia possessed a special talent for music and played by ear. After hearing a song, she was able to duplicate without reading music. She mastered the piano, guitar, banjo, saxophone and other instruments. Among favorite interests were reading, riding her motorcycle, tennis, ice skating, fishing, and water skiing. She won numerous trophies from playing in billiard tournaments. Georgia lived her life with enthusiasm.
Survivors include her children, Michael Brunner (Judy) of Springfield, MO and Diane Brunner Sublett (James) of Columbia, MO; four grandsons, Michael Brunner and Matthew Brunner (Tiffany) all of Springfield, MO, Andrew Sublett (Pamela) of Vancouver, BC and Alex Sublett of Columbia, MO; two and a half great grandchildren, Alex and Brady and an expectant new arrival in June. Preceding her in death were her husband, Gerald; her parents, Elmo and Ruth Housel; and two brothers, Dewey and Howard Housel.
No formal visitation is planned, but friends may sign the guest book anytime after 5:00 p.m., Monday, May 21, 2012. She will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Online condolences can be made at www.greenlawnfuneralhome.com.
