Hazel Irene Cates completed a life that was truly well lived and went to her heavenly home on October 2, 2012 after a long illness, at the age of 91. A strong faith was Hazel’s anchor throughout her life. She was devoted to her church, family and friends. She was a member of National Heights Baptist Church (previously East Side Baptist) for over 65 years.
She was born on March 17, 1921 to John and Margaret (Hatfield) Derrick in Springfield, MO; the eldest of six children.
She married the love of her life and life long partner, Harold DeWayne Cates, on April 13, 1938. To this union one son was born, Jackie Lee born May 10, 1947. Jackie was the joy of their lives. Hazel was a good wife and a wonderful mother.
She worked at Lily Tulip/Sweetheart for about 33 years retiring in 1990. She loved baseball and the Cardinals was her team, win or lose they were always #1!
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret (Hatfield) Derrick; her husband, Harold; her son, Jackie Lee; two brothers, Jim and Bill Derrick; two sisters, Mabel Wyre and Francis (Jean) Schroeder.
She is survived by one sister, Rosalie Essick of Nixa, MO; and many, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Loved by all, Hazel will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
On behalf of the family we would like to thank the Ozark Riverview Manor staff and Seasons Hospice for the exceptional care and love given to our Aunt Hazel during her stay.
