Springfield, Missouri — Janice Louise Carson, age 75, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by fierce strength, unwavering independence, and a deep, abiding love for her family.
Born on December 21, 1950, in Springfield, Missouri, to the late Homer and Nellie Mitchell, Janice was a woman of remarkable grit. She raised her two boys entirely on her own, pouring her heart, soul, and fierce dedication into giving them a wonderful life. Professionally, she dedicated her career to caring for others, ultimately retiring as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from the Federal Medical Center (Fed Med).
Janice was the heart of her family and loved her children, grandchildren, and extended family fiercely. She was famously strong-willed and stubborn—qualities that served her well throughout her life—and she brought that same passion into her many hobbies. Janice loved to cook everything she could get her hands on. She loved smoking meats and bringing everyone together, famously organizing an annual family breakfast picnic at Springfield Lake every single year as well as an Annual 4th of July celebration.
For over 30 years, Janice shared her life with her beloved partner, Don, who preceded her in death. Together, Don and Janice created a lifetime of memories, whether they were setting sail on cruises or spending time “piddling” around on their land outside of town.
Deeply creative, Janice loved sewing and all things crafting. She was so passionate about her projects that she even had her own “she-shed” on her property dedicated entirely to her crafts.
Janice is survived by her sons, John Meese (Melissa) of Rogersville, MO, and Charlie Meese (Brandy) of Willard, MO.
Her grandchildren include Hannah White (Bri) of Springfield, MO; Dalton Meese (Shaynie) of Rogersville, MO; Wyatt Meese of Willard, MO; Daylee Meese of Rogersville, MO; Ian Ragan (Bryanna) of St. Louis, MO; Peyton Ragan (Justin) of Springfield, MO; and Tanner Edgen (Heyley) of Springfield, MO.
She is also survived by her seven great-grandchildren: Elias Meese, Maven Meese, Arlington Meese, Hadley Jo, Cohen Reid, Sunny Alexander, and Nillial Dawn.
Janice is also survived by her sister, Sara Ann Mitchell; her very special niece, Sara Beth Collyott (Joe); and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Nellie Mitchell; her beloved partner of over 30 years, Don Scroggins; her brother, Don Mitchell; and her favorite sister-in-law, Marsha Mitchell.
