Kayla Marie Cane, affectionately known as Scarlett, passed away on September 5, 2026 at the age of 23. Born on November 29, 2002 in Fresno, California. Kayla was a beloved daughter, sister, friend, and cherished member of her family.
Kayla was a beautiful, unique soul who lived life in her own way. She loved skincare, massages, holistic wellness, beauty trends, cute clothes, fitness, music, cooking, and animals. She never left the house without her sunscreen on. She loved discovering new workouts and going to the gym.
Music was one of Kayla’s greatest escapes. She loved Lil Peep, Insane Clown Posse, Lana Del Rey, Melanie Martinez, and so many other artists. Music was something she shared with her mom and some of their favorite memories were simply riding around in the car cruising and listening to music, going to concerts together and talking about life, goals, and dreams.
Kayla loved animals with her whole heart. She adored her snake Iris, her dogs Bo and Zara, and her cats Ronnie and Gizmo. She had a love for animals of all kinds and found comfort and companionship with them.
She loved quiet places. She enjoyed listening to music by herself, spending time with her friends, cooking, and eating her mom’s cooking. She loved sushi, zucchini, and bananas—but absolutely hated papaya. And whenever she ate something she really liked, everyone knew about it because it was “fire.”
Kayla could be shy and reserved around people she didn’t know well. But once she became comfortable, she opened up and let people see the funny, loving, mischievous person underneath. She had a special way of showing affection. She loved teasing people and pushing their buttons just enough to drive them crazy.
One of her favorite things to do to her sister Madison was stick up her thumb up, turn it from side to side, and say, “Little mouth, little mouth.” She called practically everyone “bruh”—or, as she would say it, B-R-U-H. These little quirks were so completely Kayla. People will always be able to hear her voice and see her cute smile when they remember her.
Kayla was also the kind of daughter who would call her mom and say, “I have a question.” She often wanted advice about life or whatever was on her mind. Her mom was always there to listen and give advice . And when Kayla called and said, “I have a favor,” her mom already knew there was a good chance that favor might involve asking for some money. Sometimes the answer was yes, and sometimes it was no—but the conversations were always part of the unique bond they shared.
Some of Kayla’s most treasured memories with her mom were the simplest ones: going on bike rides, taking walks together, riding in the car listening to music, going to the gym, going to concerts and lying together in bed talking about life. They talked about dreams, goals, struggles, hopes, and everything in between.
Kayla faced struggles in her young life, especially when it came to understanding and managing her emotions. Finding healthy ways to cope did not always come easily to her. But she was trying. She was learning, growing, and doing the best she could to manage everything life had placed in front of her. During her recovery, she was discovering recovery support groups, church and fitness and finding things that gave her purpose to help her move forward. Her journey was not always easy, but she continued to try.
Those who knew Kayla knew that there was so much more to her than her struggles. She was loving, funny, stubborn, sensitive, playful, and sometimes a little bit of a Sour Patch Kid—sweet one minute and sour the next. But underneath it all was a young woman who loved deeply and wanted to be loved.
Kayla is loved by her mother, Breanna LaMance; her biological father, Sherman Silva; her stepfather, Benjamin Cane; and her sisters, Madison Cane and Raquel Cane, along with family and friends who loved her deeply.
For her mother, Kayla was not only a daughter. She was a workout partner, walking and biking companion, passenger on countless drives, music buddy, cooking companion, advice seeker, and someone she could lie beside in bed and simply talk to about life.
But most of all, she was the girl her mother loved to hug and kiss.
Her hugs. Her kisses. Her voice. Her laugh. Her “bruh.” Her “Nah, I’m good.” Her “I have a question.” Her “I have a favor.” Her “little mouth, little mouth.” All of those little pieces of Kayla are now precious memories that will be carried forever.
Kayla will never be defined by the hardest moments of her life. She will be remembered for the love she gave, the laughter she brought, the music she loved, the animals she cared for, the people she teased, the dreams she carried, and the beautiful, complicated, unforgettable person she was.
She was her mother’s Sour Patch Kid—sweet, sour, stubborn, funny, and so very lovable.
Kayla, you will forever be in your mom’s heart. She will miss your hugs and kisses more than words can ever express. She will miss your voice, your questions, your teasing, your laughter, and all those ordinary moments that she never knew would someday become the memories she would hold onto most tightly.
You were loved more than you ever could have known.
You are missed more than words can say.
And you will be remembered for the rest of our lives.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our Scarlett.
