Larry E. Nichols passed from this world on October 29, 2019 in his home in Fair Grove with his loved ones around him. He was born on July 2, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa to Jane and Leon Nichols.
He is preceded in death by his parents Jane and Leon Nichols and a grandson L. J. Grisham. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Glenda (Hogan) Nichols; his children, Christy Stephens of Springfield, Mo; Leslie Boman of Springfield, Mo; three grandchildren Jessica Eidson of Kansas City, Mo; Brittany Herbert (Vince) of Round Rock, Tx; and Brennan Demers of Springfield, Mo, and a sister-in-law Alta Whitehair of Fair Grove, Mo.
Larry enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and was stationed in Long Beach, Ca on the USS Jerome County (LST-848) for two years. He married his long time friend, Glenda and they both lived in New Port, R.I. when their two daughters were born. Larry also served aboard the destroyer Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) for 4 years. Then 2 years of shore duty at Chase Field Naval Air Station in Beeville, Tx. After 8 years, he came back to Missouri with his family and joined the Springfield Fire Department. He retired as a Captain after 25 years.
He and his wife traveled all over the United States and Canada on a BMW motorcycle and a three-wheeler BMW that he built. Larry enjoyed building custom trailers for friends and family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. In later years, fishing was his passion. Crappie and Walleye were his favorite fish to catch. He was a great son, husband, father, grandfather and friend.
A memorial service for Larry will be held on Tuesday, November 5th 2019 at 2:00 pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home North with a visitation starting at 1:00 pm. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens will follow the service.
