Marguerite Wilma Thompson, 101, of Springfield, Missouri, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. Marguerite was her given name, but to her friends and family she was known as Marge and Gran. Marge was born in Afton, Oklahoma on October 29, 1920, to Roberta Anne Painter Harris and Elmer Russell Harris. She moved to Tonkawa, Oklahoma at the beginning of high school, where a handsome farmer boy, named Vivian, gave her a “wink” in class. That wouldn’t be the last time she caught his eye, but for the time being they remained friends. After high school, Marge went on to graduate from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa and also attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She worked for several years while the farmer boy who winked served in the Navy as a Flight Instructor. Marge married the love of her life, Vivian L. Thompson, Jr. on September 20, 1942 in Afton at her grandfather’s home. Most of her career was spent in banking, and she retired from the Service Bank in Tonkawa as Vice President. After retirement, and before her husband’s death in 1990, Marge and Viv spent seven years traveling and camping in Branson, Missouri and Buena Vista, Colorado with a special group of friends. When she wasn’t camping, she was busy folding church bulletins, driving her “older” friends to activities, having a weekly lunch at Spring Creek Tea Room, or riding with family to Texas for a Baylor football game. As time went on and her family grew, she never wavered in her commitment to keep in close contact despite geographical separation. She loved to use her iPhone to FaceTime, text, and send and receive photos of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren until the age of 99. Marge accepted Christ as a young woman through the testimony and influence of her future husband’s family. She faithfully served at First Baptist Church in Tonkawa and then at Second Baptist Church after her move to Springfield, Missouri. Her greatest earthly loves were her husband Viv, her daughter and family, but most important to her was her strong faith in Jesus. She was a woman of prayer and left her family a lasting legacy of living by faith in the Lord. Proverbs 31: 26, 30b She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. . . . a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Marge is survived by her daughter, Suzanne and husband Jim, Springfield, Missouri; granddaughters, Stacy Forbis and late husband Matt, Nixa, MO; Krista Moran and husband Jeff, Louisville, KY; Jayme Butler and husband Caleb, O’Fallon, MO; Lindsey Armerding and husband Cole, Fort Worth, TX; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Isaac Forbis, Nixa, MO; Kara, Anna, Lydia, and Julia Moran, Louisville, KY; Jude, Olivia Marguerite, Milo, and Adya Butler, O’Fallon, MO; Eleanor, Daisy, and Brock Armerding, Fort Worth, TX; nephew, Kenneth Orr and wife Deanna, and niece, Sheryl Martin, all of Ponca City, OK. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vivian, her parents; parents-in-law, Iva and Vivian Thompson, Sr.; sister-in-law, Margaret and husband Elbrige; son-in-law, Matt Forbis; great-grandson, Brock Nathanael Moran.
There will be a Private Family Graveside Service on Friday, April 22, 2022. Celebration of Marge’s life with family and friends will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the Brock family has requested memorial contributions be made to Second Baptist Church Music Ministry, 3111 E. Battlefield Rd, Springfield, Missouri 65804
