Mary Louise Harju, 91, passed away February 3, 2024, in her home in Springfield, MO. The youngest of seven children, Mary Lou was born in Cincinnati, OH on October 20, 1932, to Albert and Minnie Burton.
While attending Baptist Bible College in Springfield, she met and married Eli Harju on July 30, 1954. This began a life ministering alongside her husband as a pastor’s wife in Missouri and California. She also traveled with him to mission fields around the world.
Mary Lou loved to gather family or friends together for food and fellowship. Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her much joy.
Mary Lou is preceded in death by her husband, Eli Harju; her parents, brothers and sisters. She is survived by her three children, Victoria (William) Hoving of Springfield, Timothy (Melissa) Harju of California,
Cynthia (Michael) Johnson of Springfield; eight grandchildren, Matthew (Lauren) Hoving, Brittany (Jeremy) Jackson, Ashley Hoving, Noah, Zachary & Samuel Harju and Christopher & Eric Johnson; and five great-grandchildren, Elsie, Nora & Scarlett Hoving and Piper & Barrett Jackson.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Greenlawn East Funeral Home, 3540 E. Seminole, Springfield, MO 65809. The funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
