Sherry was born September 24, 1940, in the home where she was raised to Wilna (Lawson) and Claud Burd of Long Lane, Missouri. She was a 1958 graduate of Buffalo High School, where she held the role of drum majorette for the well-known Buffalo Gals. More impressive still, Sherry could (and did) outrace every boy in her school in a retired police car that had been purchased by her dad.
After graduation, Sherry moved to Washington DC to work for the FBI, where she met and fell in love with a colleague, Darrell West from Rich Hill, Missouri. On September 27, 1959, Sherry and Darrell married at Pisgah Baptist Church in Long Lane, shortly thereafter moving to Kansas City, where she worked for Hallmark. Four years later, the couple relocated to Fort Leonard Wood so that Darrell could begin his service in the Army. Three years later, they relocated to Willard, Missouri, where their children, Cindy, Stacey, and Stephen, all were born.
Sherry loved her Savior, her family, reading, tending to her flowers, and decorating her home. Each season welcomed an opportunity for her to showcase her collected treasures gathered throughout the years. But she loved her children more, referring to them as “the most creative thing” she ever did. She was known for her fried chicken, delicious cakes, and homemade rolls.
Sherry is survived by her husband, Darrell; her children—Cindy Limbrick; Stacey and her husband, David Burton; and Stephen and his wife, Amber West; her grandchildren—Matthew and Megan Burton, Lauren Burton, Jocie West, Maddox West; her sister, Joy Legan; and a host of nieces and nephews whom she adored.
Sherry is preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Wilna Burd; her brother, Kenneth Burd; and several family members, including her son-in-law, Chuck Limbrick.
