When one considers a life well-lived, the life of Paul Harry Roberts must surely come to mind. He passed peacefully away from lingering health problems on November 28, 2018, at Citizens Memorial Healthcare Center in Bolivar. Paul spent nearly 93 years building that well-lived life. His salvation experience at age 12 at Humansville Baptist Church and baptism at Brush Creek was the reason for his calm, lifelong demeanor and sustains his family now during their grieving. Paul was born in Humansville on December 5, 1925, to Dorothy (Adams) and Francis Roberts. Living and working on the farm with his four siblings enriched his growing up years and established the strong work ethic that followed him throughout his life. When Paul was 11 years old, his knowledge of farming was put to the test when he needed to keep the farm going for several months while his Father accompanied his Mother, who needed brain surgery at the MAYO Clinic in Minnesota. During high school at Humansville, Paul was honored to be a Future Farmer of America STAR farmer and not surprisingly, was a four year member of the mixed choir. After graduating, he enrolled in the School of Veterinarian Science at MU Columbia, but WWII interrupted his plans when he was drafted into the United States Navy in 1943. He served on the LSMR 530 rocket carrying ship. His crew was in route to a suicide mission on the Japanese coastline, but the Lord had other plans. Years later his son Alan wrote a song describing Paul’s feelings when the Lord revealed to him during watch duty that it would be all right and not to worry. Upon his discharge in October 1945 and while planning to return to MU, he visited his Bolivar family and decided to accept a job offer from his Uncle Bill at Roberts Chevrolet Parts Department. He soon met his future wife, Helen Louise Jenkins and in 1950 began sixty-eight years of a serene and purposeful life. To this union was born three children: Paula Louise, Krista Helen, and Alan Pat. Years of fun ensued with traveling and camping in all fifty states and North America, riding horses on trail rides, award winning wood carving, gardening, and whistling and singing at every opportunity. Although not a talkative man, he loved spending time with his family and friends and relished in being the observant listener. All of us enjoyed his hilarious one liners that never failed to entertain. Paul’s beautiful singing voice was appreciated by all who heard him. He was honored to lead the music at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a devoted member for 53 years. As his health failed, Paul moved to the Missouri Veterans Home at Mount Vernon, Missouri. In the 8 1/2 years he lived there, he made numerous friends of the residents and staff. He delighted in participating in their activities and often won the talent shows with his singing. Paul’s family will always remember the kindness of the staff who took care of him during those years. They will forever have a place of honor in our hearts. Paul is survived by his wife, Helen, of Bolivar, three loving children: Paula Moore and husband, Terry of Nixa; Krista Nebel and the late Rick Nebel of Bolivar; Alan Roberts and wife, Tammy of Bolivar. His grandchildren Paul Roberts of Flemington, Rachel Cisco of Bolivar, Mackenzie Moore of Kansas City, Jonathan Cisco (and Jayme) of Scotland U.K., Adam Roberts (and Nicole) of Bolivar, David Moore of Kansas City, Lydia Nebel of New York City, Ricky Nebel of New York City, Lucas Roberts (and Alex) of Bolivar, and Annie Roberts of Bolivar, all of whom have fond memories of Papa from the gatherings at the Lillian Street house and the trips Grandma planned for the family. Paul is also survived by three adored great-grandsons: Quinn and Lowen Cisco of Scotland U.K. and Carter Roberts of Bolivar, a dear sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Larry Scroggins of Bolivar, numerous nieces and nephews he cherished, treasured relatives on both sides of the family, and all the Roberts relatives he honored for all his life. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Francis Roberts and all of his siblings: Tom (and Alma) Roberts, Carolyn (and Clark) Hendrickson, Ruth Ellen (and John) Clark, and David (and Pat) Roberts. Paul was also good buddies with his son-in-law, Rick Nebel. Services will be held at Pitts Chapel in Bolivar with visitation at 10:00 AM and the funeral immediately following at 11:00. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Bolivar. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the local Salvation Army/Community Outreach Ministries, whose compassion toward others reminded us of our Dad and the life he had lived.
