Reverend George Grant Pettey, Sr. was born on March 13th, 1941 in Kansas City, Kansas. He
went peacefully to be with our Lord on April 20th, 2021. He was open about his love for the Lord
and for his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rachel and Robert Pettey; and his
siblings, Levy Pettey, Bill and Sharon Pettey (spouse), and Mary and J.J. Davis (spouse). These
branches of his family tree produced George with many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The love
of his life was Joyce Ann (Johnson) Pettey, and they married on June 20th 1962 in Hopewell,
Virginia. Together they had four children, Karen (married to Rick Newman), George (Married to
Jeanie Pettey), Debbie, and Joy, each of which they loved unconditionally. George was blessed
with eleven grandchildren: Cinda Worley, George Young III, Nikki (Young) Dalene and Derek
Dalene (spouse), Hannah (Gissler) Mueller and Josh Mueller (spouse), Thomas and Alesha
(Torres) Gissler (spouse), Abigail Whisnant, Breyawnia Young, Grant Pettey, and Levi Triplett. His family has
continued to grow with the addition of many beautiful great-grandchildren, and his legacy will
live on in this world. During his life, George served in the Army, graduated from BBC in 1967,
and served the Lord as a pastor for many years. He led countless people to salvation, including
his family, baptizing many of his own grandchildren. He was skilled at using computers, enjoyed
watching Western television, reading, and studying the bible. He retired from SPS in 2010,
resigned from Pleasant View Baptist Church in 2019, and lived the rest of his life with Joyce,
Hannah, and Josh at their home in Springfield, Missouri. He is survived by his wife, all of his
children, all of his grandchildren, all of their children, and his close friends Raymond and Beverly
Sowards, who find comfort in knowing they will see him again in heaven. A visitation will be held
on Monday, April 26th, from 5-7PM at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3506 North National Ave. His
funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 27th at 11AM followed by the burial in Missouri
Veterans Cemetery, 5201 South Southwood Rd, at 1PM.
