Richard Darrell Smythe, age 62, of Ozark, MO, passed away Friday, September 9, 2011, in his home. He was born July 14, 1949, in Springfield, MO, to Charles and Etta (Gold) Smythe. He was a member of the Battlefield Assembly of God Church. He was proud for having served in the U.S. United States Navy during Viet Nam. Rick was involved in the Chub O’Reilly cancer support group, and attended even when he wasn’t at his best, he felt that they were as a second family to him. He loved working with wood, and building things like Ruby Tuesday’s, and Olive Garden’s. His faith in God kept him going, as he said ” I’m a blessed man!” Most importantly his family meant the world to him, he loved them dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Sean Smythe; a brother Jimmy Smythe; and a sister Charlene Louke.
Rick is survived by his wife Mary Smythe of the home; a son Michael C. Smythe and wife Tina of Rogersville, MO; a daughter Sarah Jo Smythe and her partner Chris Beaty of Springfield, MO; three step-sons: Jeffrey Carlock, Steve Carlock and wife Lori, and Matthew Carlock all of Ozark, MO; two brothers: Jerry Smythe and wife Katharine of Nixa, MO, and Hank Smythe and wife Karen of Kimberling City, MO; four sisters: Barbara Russell of Branson, MO, Sherry Phipps of Shell Knob, MO, Linda Smith and husband Sanford of Shell Knob, and Dixie Rees and husband Joe of Springfield, MO; eight grandchildren; Gabe, Isaiah, Samuel, Baylee, Taylor, Madyson, Stevie, and Bryce; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 12, 2011, at Greenlawn Funeral Home East, Springfield, MO, with Pastor Rich Orrell officiating. Burial will follow in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, MO. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2011, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the CurePC.org (Pancreatic Cancer).
