Richard F. Lines (Dick), 92, of Overland Park, Kansas, died March 2, 2011, at home with his wife Luetta (Lou) and his daughter Nancy at his side.
Dick was born in Joplin, Missouri on July 6, 1918, to Alma and Jesse Lines. He was one four children. Dick joined the Navy in 1940 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He served aboard the U.S.S. Worden, which was sunk off the coast of the Aleutian Islands, and later aboard the Murray and the Preston in the South Pacific.
Dick and Lou were married in Joplin, Missouri in 1942. In 1944, after sustaining injuries for which he was awarded a Purple Heart, Dick received an honorable discharge from the Navy and began a lifetime career as a newspaper pressman. He and Lou lived for 22 years in Kansas City and then moved to Houston, Texas. Dick and Lou retired to Springfield in 1987.
There will be a visitation in the Greenlawn Funeral Home South, 441 W. Battlefield, on Tuesday, March 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral will be in Wesley Methodist Church at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, March 9, to be followed by a brief military service in the Veterans Cemetary.
