Rollin H Smith, Jr. (Smitty) was born in Kansas City, MO, February 23, 1938, and after a short hospital stay, died April 15, 2011, at the age of 73. Smitty lived in Rich Hill, MO until 1946, when his family moved to West Plains, MO, where he graduated from West Plains High School in 1956. He started his undergraduate work at Allegheny College and completed his BA at Southern Methodist University. He went on to earn his MBA from Drury University. In 1966, he married Ruby Jane Pincombe and to this union, 3 children were born, Rollin H (Trey) Smith, III, John Erin and Laura Suzanne. Smitty worked for TWA, spending several years in Saudi Arabia. He then moved to Springfield, MO where he was employed by Sweetheart Cup and later, the Springfield Public School System.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Rollin H and Ruth Smith of West Plains, and one brother, Rev. Robert J. Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Jane, his children: Trey (Tonya), Erin, Laura (Brian); grandchildren, Tyler, Clayton, Elon, Mitchem, Cassidy, Robert, step-grandson Hunter, his sisters, Barbara (Gene) Pittman, and Marilyn Smith, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He enjoyed good mystery novels and crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed many summers at the H. Roe Bartle Boy Scout Reservation, Camp Sawmill, Osceola, MO, where he was inducted into the Tribe of Mic-O-Say as an Honorary Warrior. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
At his request, no services will be held. A private burial will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Springfield Public School Foundation “Reading Roundup” 3002 W. Kildee, Springfield, MO 65810. Arrangements have been entrusted to Greenlawn Funeral Home South.
