Roma Janette was born on March 23, 1940 at Burge Hospital and passed away August 23 at Woodland Manor in Springfield, MO. She was the oldest child of Cecil James and Lorene Evenell (Potter) Anderson. Janette graduated from Central High and attended Southwest Missouri State College until she met and married James H. Abbott, II.After their oldest daughter was born, they moved to St. Louis where their family grew to include three more children. The family returned to Springfield in 1978, and soon after Janette found herself a single mother. She decided to return to college at the age of 40 to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. She was passionate about her profession and taught 3rd grade in Clever, MO for most of her career. One of her proudest accomplishments was earning an M.Ed.Yet, she was the most proud of her children and was known to brag on them to any captive audience. She also cherished being a grandma and loved spending time with her grandkids telling stories, coloring Easter eggs, camping in the backyard, and embracing teachable moments. Making a mess was never a concern as long as learning was involved. Janette was a very talented artist, mostly sketching and working with oil paints. She was always delighted to use her talent in many capacities, especially for her school or church.She and her family were Charter members of Ridgecrest Baptist where she taught Sunday School, directed VBS, and worked as nursery coordinator. She remained a committed member of the church until her passing.She was proceeded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother, her sisters and best friends Wanda Thompson (J.D.), and Thelma Towe (Paul), daughters Annette Abbott and Jane Collins (Warren), son Scott Abbott (Connie), and daughter Nicole Montgomery (John R.), 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.A visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, Aug 26 with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug 27 at Greenlawn East in Springfield. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Janette was a very vibrant person and specifically requested that those attending her services not wear the color black.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Care to Learn or Pet Therapy of the Ozarks.
