Ronald “Stoney” Collins, 74, of Springfield, MO, passed away on February 12, 2024, surrounded by his wife of 53 years, Billie Collins, and their two daughters, Melinda Downs and Michelle Collins, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO. Ron was a caring husband, father, brother, cherished friend to many, and an esteemed veteran. Ron leaves behind a legacy of honor, dedication, and service that will forever be treasured by those who had the privilege of knowing him. Ron was born on December 7, 1949, to Clyde Merle Collins and Patricia McKown Collins Chapman in Waurika, OK. Ron attended Moore, OK High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in April 1969. Ron served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Navy for 30 years and retired as a Command Master Chief in 1999. He dedicated his career to defending freedom and protecting the values he held dear. Ron rose through the ranks, demonstrating unwavering leadership. His commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of his subordinates, peers, and superiors. He traveled worldwide and lived all over the United States during his meritorious military career. Ron was united in marriage to Billie Branham Collins in June of 1970. Ron and Billie were blessed with two daughters, Melinda Downs, and Michelle Collins.

After his honorable retirement from the Navy, Ron and Billie moved to Springfield, MO, where he continued to embody the principles of service in his civilian life, working for Prime Industries for ten years. Ron retired in 2012. Ron then spent his time enjoying his family and grandchildren and working in his shop. Ron will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather, and as a great leader who adored all of his family. Ron was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and hardheaded, stubborn nature, which gave him his nickname “Stoney.” Ron’s unwavering support, guidance, and love will be dearly missed by all those fortunate enough to know him.

Ron was preceded in death by both of his parents, Clyde Collins and Patricia McKown Collins Chapman, and his brother, Don Collins.

Ron is survived by his wife, Billie Collins, and their two daughters, Melinda Downs and her husband, R.T. Downs of Satellite Beach, FL, and Michelle Collins of Norman, OK. His role as grandfather was one, he embraced with joy and pride, leaving behind a legacy of four grandchildren: Cade Collins of Springfield, MO; Robbie and Jessica Downs Talmage of Aberdeen, SD; Jordan Downs of Leland, NC; and Riley Collins of Norman, OK. His sisters, Catherine Booth of Moore, OK, and Sheryl Simmons of Tulsa, OK. He also leaves many beloved Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Nieces, and Nephews behind.

In keeping with Ron’s wishes, cremation has taken place. His family and friends will celebrate Ron’s life at a gathering to be held at a later date in Oklahoma, where stories will be shared, and his memory will be honored.

Though Ron may be gone from our sight, his spirit will continue to inspire us all.
