Silas Edward Allen, age 84, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on February 11, 2025, at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield. Silas was born to Wade and Lillie (Karner) Allen on January 14, 1941, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, a small town south of Tulsa. Silas was raised in Okmulgee and graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1959. Following high school, Silas worked for a short period of time in Oklahoma City. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Jane Holmes, on November 10, 1964, in Purcell, Oklahoma, and recently celebrated sixty years of marriage. Silas and Jane were blessed with a loving daughter, Ky.
After their marriage in 1964, Silas and Jane moved to Springfield, where they would remain the rest of their lives. Silas worked for a brief time at Royal Typewriter before making a significant career change. In 1967, Silas began a 27-year career with the Springfield Police Department, where he faithfully served as a police officer. Silas thoroughly enjoyed his time on the streets and took pride in helping to make Springfield a safer place for its citizens. Silas retired from the police department in 1994 and was recognized for his distinguished and honorable service in law enforcement. After his retirement, Silas worked the next ten years as a maintenance worker at St. John’s Hospital (Mercy).
In 2005, Silas retired for the last time in order to relax and travel with Jane. The two shared many adventures as they traveled across the United States and Candada with their fifth wheel. From 2008-2018, Silas and Jane resided at Llano Grande, an RV park in McAllen, Texas. The snowbirds enjoyed the warmth of Texas for six months each year. They enjoyed visiting various farmer’s markets, shops, and restaurants. Silas also enjoyed working in the park’s woodshop where he handcrafted beautiful wood bowls and other works of art. More importantly, they enjoyed spending time with each other on the Texas seashore. Silas and Jane also made memories while traveling across the country on his Honda Goldwing. Their favorite destinations included Colorado, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Silas also enjoyed sharing the open road with his brother, James, for countless weekend Goldwing excursions.
In 2018, Silas and Jane parked their fifth wheel and Goldwing for the last time in Springfield. This gave Silas time to pursue his other hobbies and pastimes such as gardening and landscaping. His lawn was always impeccably manicured, and his flower gardens were the envy of his neighborhood. In fact, Silas won many awards for having the best yard in the neighborhood. He was particularly fond of lilies, irises, and forever flowers (native to Missouri). When not working in his yard or his many flower gardens, Silas enjoyed listening to Cusco, Yanni, Enya, and country music. He was a fan of the big screen and enjoyed science fiction and westerns. Star Trek, Star Wars, and Dances with Wolves were among his favorites. He especially liked to go to the movies with his daughter, Ky. He also liked to watch old police shows such as Dragnet, Columbo, Kojak, and Blue Bloods.
Silas will be remembered as devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was hardworking, gentle, and always level-headed. In the words of his daughter, “Dad was a beautiful soul who loved his family and never ever lost his temper.”
Silas was preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Lillie Allen; brother, Donald Allen; brother, James Allen; and grandson, William David Smoot. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Jane Allen; daughter, Ky Kent and her husband, David; stepdaughter, Gayla Hall; granddaughter, Faith Dezwarte and her significant other, Charles Duffy; step-granddaughter, Shelena Larkin; step-great-grandson, Anakin Larkin; sister, Linda Lundy; niece, Shirley; and a host of good friends and former colleagues.
