Stella Sharline
Wakefield,
age 93, of Bolivar, MO, passed away Sunday,
October 6, 2013, at her home.
She was born the second of three
daughters September 22, 1920, in Aldrich, MO, to Elza
and Sarah “Allie” (Williams) Wilson. Stella was saved at an early age at Enon
Missionary Baptist Church and often told of how they had to chop ice for her
baptism. She always added she never even
caught a cold. She was a member of the Bismont Missionary Baptist Church.
She was united in marriage to Eldon
Wakefield on March 27, 1943, after he returned home from his US Navy service,
after being wounded at sea. He was also
a Pearl Harbor survivor. They raised three sons and one daughter. She graduated
from SMS with a Bachelors of Science in Education. Stella taught elementary school and
her first teaching position was at Booth School, and Collins Rural School which
were both one room schools, Halfway and Fair Play School districts, as well as
two years in California, before retiring in 1985. Stella had a special gift for helping
children with special problems in life and as well as school.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband H. Eldon
Wakefield; and two sisters: Beulah Slagle, and Juanita Bales.
She is survived by her four children: Bruce Wakefield and wife Mary of
Aldrich, MO, Richard Wakefield and wife Carolyn of Bolivar, MO, Arlene Russell
and husband Dean of Parkville, MO, and Zack Wakefield and wife Linda of
Grandview, MO; 10 grandchildren: Tammy
Herbert and husband Danny, Carl Wakefield and wife Hillary, Matthew Wakefield
and wife Angie, Tracy Hillenburg and husband Tim, Daniel Wakefield and wife
Laura, Rachel Andre’ and husband Rob, Nathan Wakefield, Erin Russell, Vance
Vahle, and Shannon Vahle and wife Madison; 15 great grandchildren and 1 great
great granddaughter; as well as many other relatives and friends.
Stella was a loving
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she enjoyed hosting family
Holiday dinners and being involved with her family. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday,
October 10, 2013, at Pitts Chapel Bolivar,
MO, with Bro.
Gary Campbell officiating. Burial
will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Bolivar, MO. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday,
October 9, 2013, in the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Pitts Chapel Bolivar, MO.
