Steve Ray “Coach” was born on August 3, 1941 and died on May 27, 2013 in his home. Steve was many things to many people: husband, dad, papa, brother, uncle, coach and friend. He was one of 18 children born to Homer and Lola Ray of Fair Grove, MO. He graduated from Fair Grove H.S. in 1959 and married Pat (Carver) Ray in 1963.
Throughout his life, Steve was a die-hard Cardinal fan and a lover of all sports. For over 40 years he coached numerous teams including men’s and women’s AAA softball, Little League, Mighty Mites, and boys and girls basketball. He received the Boys Club’s “Coach of the Year” award in 1987.
Steve also loved music; bluegrass and country were his favorites. Almost everyone who knew him has danced with him at least once.
He found his greatest joy in his seven grandchildren; five cowboys and two mollies.
Steve is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Pat; their children: Jackie and husband Rob Green, Judge and wife Angela Ray, and Mandie and husband Wes Shepard; grandchildren: Ashtin, Fisher, Parker, Rhys, Connor, Haven and Teague; three brothers; five sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of all who knew him. Steve was a kind and extremely generous spirit who filled our lives with love and laughter. He was our hero and the world was a better place with him in it.
In remembrance of Steve, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, do as he did and help someone in need.
