Steven Harold Phillips, age 68, of Springfield, Missouri, was the beloved son of Herbert Harold Phillips and Ora Marie (Scroggins) Phillips. Steven was a man whose life was filled with friendship, laughter, athletics, and service to others. Steven was known for his kind heart, remarkable memory, and love for people, especially his family. Steven’s smile-through-it approach and his never-quit attitude inspired many as he persevered through life’s challenges.
Steven proudly participated in Special Olympics, A Sporting Chance, and Park Board activities, where he built lifelong friendships and created countless memories. Whether on the field, at the bowling alley, or cheering from the stands, he was always part of the action.
Steven followed sports teams with unmatched dedication. His favorites included Springfield and St. Louis Cardinals, the MSU Lady Bears, and the Kansas City Chiefs—although those who knew him best would say his favorite team was usually whichever one was winning that day. He faithfully kept score for Sporting Chance baseball games and spent countless hours recording the scores and statistics of his favorite teams. Bowling brought him tremendous joy. He loved time spent with friends at the lanes and took great pride in earning his bowling championship watch, one of his most treasured possessions.
Steven was also a collector at heart. He loved gathering sports memorabilia, ball caps, and T-shirts, each item representing a team, a memory, or a special moment in his life.
Perhaps more than anything, Steven loved people. He never met a stranger and never forgot a name. Friends, family, teammates, coaches, and community members were always greeted with a smile and remembered long after their first meeting. Steven was a devoted brother who regularly checked in and would always end the call with “love you brother.” Steven’s great nieces and all children held a special place in his heart. He loved to laugh, joke, and tease with every child he met. Giggles and a chase through the house would always ensue when Steven was around. His playful spirit brought smiles wherever he went.
Steven was preceded in death by his loving parents Herb and Ora Phillips, a sister Eileen Knight from Vancouver Washington, sisters Debbie Burk and Cindy Burk of Springfield and a brother Andy Burk of Springfield. He is survived by his brother, Ralph Phillips and wife Lisa of Ozark, Missouri, and his sister, Janet Hilliard and husband Bob of Talent, Oregon. Steven was loved and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great-great nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to the staff of KC Stepping Stones who assisted Steve in living out a life-long dream of living in his own apartment. Each staff member’s devotion and dedication to Steven helped him to live as independently as he could.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to any of the programs that brought joy to Steven: A Sporting Chance, Special Olympics, Springfield Park Board or KC Stepping Stones.
