Mrs. Thelma Mae Rice, age 93 of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida, formerly of Bolivar, MO passed away Tuesday April 5, 2011 of natural causes. She was born on November 1, 1917 in Newell, West Virginia. Thelma was the first born child to Clifford and Macie Newbrough. Her younger sister Wilma was born two years later. Thelma married L. Glenn Rice on February 2, 1939; they had two children: Dennis born December 12, 1939 and a daughter, Shirley born March 26,1943. She and her husband were very actively involved in Bolivar Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and one sister.
Thelma is survived by her son Dennis Rice and his wife Rebecca of Anaheim Hills, CA; her daughter Shirley Blanch and her husband John of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL; 7 grandchildren Robin Rice, Erin Rice, Andrew Rice, Lori Erwin, Marsha Painter-Rey, Pamela Fiorentino and Craig Painter; 8 great grandchildren Tephani Uxa, Mathew Seitz, LeeAnn Erwin, Alan Erwin, Angela Fiorentino, Nicholas Rice, Isabella Fiorentino, Valeria Rice; 2 great-great grandchidlren Harlan Uxa and Finnley Uxa; a sister-in-law Marian Rice of Bolivar, MO; 5 nieces Sandra Frieze, Linda Williamson. Donna Cole, Paula Davis and Cheryl Jenkins; 2 nephews William Rice and Paul Wiget.
She will also be missed by Dolly, a little teacup yorkie, who Thelma named for her deceased best friend.
Thelma will be remembered for her love of music, shopping for people who could not do it for themselves, quilting, dedication to her family and her wonderful sense of humor.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thelma Mae Rice will be at 2:00 pm Sunday April 10, 2011 in Pitts Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Bolivar, MO. Visitations will be from 2 – 4 pm on Saturday and also 7 to 9 pm, both in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bolivar Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
