Velma (Lawler) Crisp was born the daughter of George and Nettie (Wynn) Lawler on May 2, 1918, near Hartville, MO. She departed this life at home in Springfield, MO, on August 2, 2022, at the age of 104.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Archie Crisp; four brothers: Lowell, Dwight, Donald, and Vernon Lawler: and three sisters, Vernice Bolian, Norma Bohannan, and Sylvia Lawler. Velma married Archie Crisp on September 20, 1934. They had two daughters: Shirley Cutburth and Twila Price.
Velma professed her faith in Jesus Christ at a young age and was a member of the High Street Baptist Church for many years. She was a part of the choir at High Street and especially enjoyed participating in the “Living Christmas Tree.” Velma also loved being a part of the “Jolly Sixties” at High Street as the group made many trips together. Another group she was involved in was Chapter 128 of The Ozarks Grandmothers Club.
Velma was very active up into her 90s. She loved shopping with family and little trinkets soon became treasures she would add to her many collections. Other hobbies included jig-saw puzzles, word search games and crossword puzzles. However, reading her Bible was what Velma enjoyed most.
Velma is survived by her daughters: Shirley Cutburth and Twila Price and her husband Jerry, all of Springfield, MO. She also is survived by five grandchildren and their spouses: Brenda (Cutburth) Jackson and her husband Pepper of Halltown, MO, Terry Cutburth and Robin Pepper of Springfield, MO, Donnie Cutburth and wife Kristy of Buffalo, MO, Jason Price and wife Jennifer of California, and Jared Price and wife Megan of Springfield, MO. Velma is also survived by four great grandchildren: Chris Jackson, Ava Price, Kinley Price, and Anderson Price; as well as one great-great grandchild: Nettie Grace Jackson.
Velma’s legacy with her family is one of a life of loving care. She was a babysitter for her grandchildren when needed. Her home was also a refuge for a run-away granddaughter who would sneak away from her parents on occasion to go to grandma’s house nearby for cookies. This legacy continued to her great grandchildren as she and Archie would often babysit while parents worked. Velma Crisp was a beautiful lady with a sense of humor. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to thank Integrity Hospice for helping care for Velma.
