Velma Powell Breshears
Velma departed this life Sunday morning, Sept. 9, 2012 at the Baptist Home in Ozark, to make her home in glory. She was born August 12, 1918 in Lawton, OK, to Edward Harrison Powell and Mary Elvira (Gimlin) Powell. Velma was a 1935 graduate of Fair Grove High School and completed Draughon’s Business College in Springfield. She worked as a bookkeeper before and after raising her family, retiring from the Frisco Railroad office in 1983.
Velma married Clifford Breshears, Aug. 11, 1939, to which three children were born, all of which survive her. Mary Frances Freeman, Norma Lee Tolbert (Jerry), and William Clifford “Bill” Breshears (Betty). She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five sisters and brothers, and a son-in-law Jim Freeman. She is also survived by six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a host of memorable friends.
Velma was saved and baptized at an early age and spent all of her adult years as a member of Liberty Baptist Church, north of Springfield. She served in many capacities in school and church and was always a friend and helper to anyone.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 11, 2012 from 7-8:30 pm in Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Funeral services will be Wed. Sept. 12, 2012 at 3:00 pm in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be left at www.greenlawnfuneralhome.com
